March 3: Indy rally to defend LGBTQ rights!

Friday, March 3
4:30 pm
Indiana Statehouse, East Steps

Join the Indianapolis branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation to demand the protection of life-saving gender-affirming healthcare, the restoration of the right to change ID gender markers, and an end to the legislative attacks on LGBTQ Hoosiers!

Over the past month, hundreds of Hoosiers have protested the intensifying assaults against the LGBTQ community across the state. From signing and circulating petitions to speaking out at legislative sessions, the people have especially demonstrated their support for the trans community in response to the Indiana General Assembly’s coordinated efforts to erase our existence.

This legislative session has seen the introduction of nearly two dozen anti-LGBTQ bills by state lawmakers. House Bill 1608, based on Florida’s infamous “Don’t Say Gay” law, prohibits discussion of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people with vague language banning discussion of “human sexuality.” HB 1608 also bans teachers from using a student’s preferred name and pronouns unless parents give consent while requiring school officials to out transgender students to their parents if they come out in school, even if the student does not consent.

As of December 6, 2022, the Indiana Court of Appeals Opinion 22A-MI-502 removes the right to change gender markers on IDs for minors and has been used as precedent to deny this right to adults. These bills are not rooted in best educational, health care, or mental health practices, nor are they backed by scientific findings. Rather, this onslaught is simply a cynical move by politicians to deflect from their failure to serve their constituents by catering to a tiny group of extremists.

According to Gallup and the Williams Institute, over 300,000 Hoosiers are LGBTQ, and the vast majority of Hoosiers support LGBTQ rights, which is why nine of the 10 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in last year’s session failed and why the majority of this year’s bills never reached a chamber floor. Nevertheless, we must defend our rights and the hateful attacks on Hoosiers from those meant to represent the people.

This Friday’s protest will be one of several statewide actions we’re organizing in Bloomington, Muncie, Kokomo, and Kokomo between March 3-9. Wherever you are in Indiana, show up to continue building the power we need to not only defeat these attacks, but to win real liberation for the LGBTQ community and for all oppressed peoples!
