Drop by for our first Liberation Forum of 2024! Three days after our 2024 March for Choice and two days after the 51st anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade ruling, this month’s Forum focuses on the ongoing struggle for abortion rights in Indiana and reproductive justice worldwide.

Ever since June 24, 2022, when six unelected right-wing judges overturned the right to abortion in the Dobbs ruling, the movement has been in the position of having to fight the grueling, state-by-state battle inside and outside legislative bodies dominated exclusively by the far-right and right-wing parties.

However, not a single right that poor, working, and oppressed people have or had in the U.S. were ever the result of politicians making the “right” decisions. The Roe v. Wade ruling is a case in point: the court was forced to guarantee the right to abortion because of the struggle of tens of millions of women demanding justice in the 1960s and early 1970s. Our forum will celebrate the victories we have won in this women-led struggle and examine the revolutionary changes required to make and uphold the rights of women and all people to reproductive justice and bodily autonomy.

A revolutionary struggle for all working and oppressed people?

The reason the struggle for abortion access is an issue for our entire class is because it is a struggle against the capitalist system and its entrenched patriarchy, sexism, racism, and all forms of oppression.

The reason it is a revolutionary struggle is because it is a struggle to abolish the Supreme Court. Throughout history, the Supreme Court has consistently ruled against the many. The Court upheld slavery and ruled that Black enslaved people were not humans but property, defended Jim Crow segregation, and ruled that the mass imprisonment of Japanese Americans in concentration camps was legal, to name just a few of their many crimes.

Nine unelected judges, appointed for lifetime terms, should not have the discretion to eviscerate the rights of hundreds of millions of people in the United States. The Supreme Court secures the dictatorship of the capitalist class, where nine individuals can force their will on the vast majority of people who are in favor of reproductive rights and abortion access, including a majority here in Indiana.

In the U.S., broad-based unity is necessary for the liberation of any sector of working and oppressed people, so let’s forge a higher political consciousness and reach a higher level of struggle. The people’s struggle will be the path to win and secure abortion rights and all other rights once again.

We hope to see you there so you can get involved in the crucial struggle for reproductive liberation taking place and join the struggle for a society free of all forms of oppression!
