Piñatas as protest: Artist workshop with Gabriela Mojica

Wednesday, February 18
6:00–9:00 pm
Fonseca-Du Bois Gallery
1619 Prospect St

Join the Fonseca-Du Bois Gallery for a special workshop that transforms a beloved cultural tradition into a creative tool for justice. Under the guidance of artist Gabriela Mojica, participants will learn the art and history of piñata-making while crafting symbolic pieces for upcoming community actions.

The piñatas created in this session will be crafted for upcoming community actions targeting ICE, transforming a traditional art form into a potent tool of protest and public awareness. This hands-on session is an opportunity to connect with the rich Latin American roots of the piñata and develop a practical skill for any celebration. More than just a craft class, it’s an act of collective creativity aimed at raising awareness and challenging injustice.

The workshop will be led by Gabriela Mojica, a self-taught Mexican-born artist and an 18-year resident of Indianapolis. With over 30 years of painting experience, Gabriela’s work is deeply inspired by her heritage, expressing a vibrant love for Latin culture through color and texture. She believes art is the freedom to express the heart, leaving a piece of memory and roots in every creation.

This is a ticketed fundraiser with limited space for approximately 20 participants. Tickets are offered on a sliding scale of $15–$20 to cover supplies. Reserve your spot to be part of this unique fusion of culture, craft, and community action.
