The origins and future of the Republic of New Afrika

New Afrikan Historian and organizer Haki Kweli Shakur, Spokesperson for the August Third Collective, spoke at the Indianapolis Liberation Center for the annual Black August Liberation Forum organized by PSL Indianapolis on August 27.

Interviewed by PSL member Derek Ford, Haki explains how he got involved in the New Afrikan Independence Movement (NAIM) through his mentor Sanyika Shakur (a/k/a “Monster Kody”), when he became a citizen of the Republic of New Afrika, the origins and evolution of the NAIM, the political significance behind the New Afrikan identity, the centrality of Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War in the struggle today, and his thoughts on the first steps you can take to get involved in the struggle to free all oppressed people.

Watch, Learn, and Struggle!

PSL Indianapolis wants to again extend our deep gratitude for Haki, who so generously sacrifices his time to educate, network, and build connections between different organizations, individuals, and struggles.

In addition to his role in the August Third Collective, Haki is a member of the Virginia chapter of the Shaka Shakur Freedom Campaign. He wrote the preface to Shaka A. Shakur’s latest booklet, From the Republic of New Afrika to Palestine: National Liberation in Context (Indianapolis Liberator, 2024), as well as the guest introduction to Shaka A. Shakur’s forthcoming book, Manifestations of Thought: When the Dragon Comes (1804 Books, 2025), edited by Derek Ford and Tessa Kochert in collaboration with Shaka Shakur.
