From the Haitian Revolution and Nat Turner’s Revolt to the Watts Rebellion and the birthdays of Fred Hampton, Debbie Sims Africa, Mutulu Shakur, Chokwe Lumumba, and others, August carries immense weight in the revolutionary struggle for Black/New Afrikan Liberation.
For our 2025 special Black August forum, we’re honored to hear from guest speaker Haki Kweli Shakur. A New Afrikan historian, Shakur is deeply engaged in the national liberation struggle and, most notably, is National Spokesperson for The August Third Collective, a cadre organization of the New Afrikan Independence Movement, founded by Sanyika Shakur and other New Afrikan Political Prisoners.

First commemorated in 1979 by prisoners at San Quentin prison, where George Jackson was assassinated on August 21, 1971, Black August is a time to honor fallen freedom fighters and recommit ourselves to the fight to free all political prisoners and prisoners of war. Come through to:
- Learn about the world significance of and lessons from the Haitian Revolution;
- Analyze how the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has reignited the spirit of Pan-African resistance across the continent;
- Dig past the “symbol” of George Jackson, discussing not only his evolution as a revolutionary but the broader international social context in which it took place; and
- Find out how to get involved in contemporary struggles to free the Black/New Afrikan nation and all political prisoners and prisoners of war.
Whether you’re just hearing about Black August for the first time or have been commemorating it for years, we’ll all benefit from collectively studying the lessons of the past and applying them to today’s struggles.
If you’re ready to start struggling with us, apply to join the PSL or learn more about the PSL and the Indianapolis Branch! And be sure to check out the Liberation Center Store to cop one of our three Black August bundles with books, pamphlets, zines, buttons, and tee-shirts.
