The letter-writing event on Sept. 9, organized in partnership by Umeed-Hope and the Indianapolis Liberation Center, was far more than a simple act of correspondence. It was a powerful exercise in radical empathy and human connection, beautifully hosted by the Guru Nanak Sikh Society. The event even attracted the attention of the Associated Press, who sent several reporters.

The coverage from AP News was instrumental, as it amplified our message of solidarity beyond our local community, validating the critical need for human connection in the face of systemic isolation and bringing national attention to the plight of those in detention right here in Indiana. The significance of this gathering lies in its layers of compassion. For individuals enduring the isolation and harsh conditions of immigration detention, a letter is a lifeline. But these were not just any letters. For many recipients, this will be the first time in a long time they see words written in their native language—a profound reminder of home and identity that the detention system works to erase. Each message, whether a small gesture of peace, a prayer, or a word of encouragement, becomes a tangible spark of hope from a caring stranger, affirming that they are not forgotten.

This act of solidarity was deeply enriched by its setting. Gathering at the Guru Nanadk Sikh Society—a pillar of community service for decades—grounded the event in the Sikh principles of seva (selfless service) and langar (community meal). Sharing a meal prepared in the Gurdwara’s free kitchen was a practice in equality and collective care, embodying the very world Umeed-Hope strives to build.

Ultimately, the event was a living example of Umeed-Hope’s mission: a Sikh-led coalition working in solidarity with other marginalized communities to dismantle oppression. It moved beyond charity to resistance, creating a direct line of support and human warmth between our community and those locked away from it. Thank you to all who participated in this vital act of connection and liberation.
