“I look at my ankle and I’m still incarcerated”

The March 2024 entry in our Fourth Friday art series, “Unleashing the creativity of the masses,” featured a collaborative project between GANGGANG and the Marion Country Reentry Coalition. The artwork, titled, “Perceptions,” centered the experiences and realities of five of our formerly incarcerated neighbors.

At the exhibition opening, Liberation Center organizers consulted with our artistic partners, who both quickly and easily agreed to invite Vernon T. Bateman to the podium. Bateman is both formerly incarcerated and currently incarcerated. After serving 26 years in prison, half of them in solitary confinement, Bateman is currently living outside of a physical prison but inside of a social prison.

This is the first time Bateman delivered an impromptu speech since his release from prison in June 2023.
