The Indianapolis Liberation Center is promoting this upcoming First Friday event at the Indiana Landmarks, which features Vernon T. Bateman.
Indiana Landmarks presents “The Outsiders,” a free art exhibit highlighting self-taught Indianapolis artists. Curated by Clayton Hamilton of Indianapolis’s InSight Art, the group show features paintings, photography, and sculpture by artists Anthony Armstrong, Vernon T. Bateman, and Dennis Green.
Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available at the First Friday opening reception on August 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. when guests can also see the stunning architecture of Indiana Landmarks Center’s grand spaces. Built as a Methodist church in the nineteenth century, the restored and adapted structure holds performance and reception venues in addition to Rapp Family Gallery and Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters.
About the Artists
Anthony Armstrong, a self-taught abstract artist and photographer, has previously displayed works at the Harrison Center for the Arts, the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library, the Indianapolis Central Library, and the 305 Wine Garage, Fortville, Indiana, in addition to inclusion in Indianapolis’s Southside Art League National Abstract Competition. Through his monochrome photography, Armstrong captures the essence of the people and places seen in his travels, while his abstract mixed-media paintings emphasize texture and earth tones.
Vernon T. Bateman, a self-taught painter, offers an inspiring journey of artistic expression, achieved despite 25 years of false incarceration. Bateman’s spirit of determination shines through his work, which includes three published children’s books and paintings that featuring rural, urban, and outer space environments.
Dennis B. Green, an accomplished artist, metalsmith, and woodworker, trained as a millwright before seeing the potential of combining his technical skills with his love of creative steel sculpture and public art. Green’s work is displayed in the permanent collections of Celadon Trucking, Airfreight, Citizens Energy Group, Red Gold Tomatoes, among other corporate headquarters in central Indiana. He has participated in multiple group exhibitions including shows at the Indianapolis Artsgarden, Indiana University, and Clowes Hall.
