On August 11 at 7:00 PM, the City-County Council will vote on a new 9:00 PM curfew for minors–a racist policy that criminalizes our youth rather than addressing the root causes of violence. Join PSL Indy and ANSWER Indiana for a rally at 6:30 PM to oppose this attack on our communities.
This curfew comes in response to the July 5 mass shooting that left two teenagers dead and five injured. Rather than investing in healthcare, education, or youth programs, the council has chosen to expand police power over our communities.
Curfews have a long history as tools of oppression, dating back to slave patrols in the 1600s. In 2020, Indianapolis used curfews to suppress protests after the murder of George Floyd. Today, this policy will disproportionately target Black and brown youth who already face harassment from IMPD.
At a recent PSL town hall on youth safety in Indianapolis, community members made their demands clear: we need more parks, recreation centers, and community resources–not more policing. The council’s curfew proposal shows they would rather criminalize our youth than meet their basic needs.
Join us on August 11 to make our voices heard before this harmful ordinance goes to a vote.
