Demand that Miami Correctional Facility’s leadership stop their guards and nurses from targeting a disabled Black man, Kevin J. Taylor #870721. Mr. Taylor is suffering from extreme abuse and neglect, with facility staff denying him necessary attention and treatment. Mr. Taylor’s disability stems from a 2022 assault perpetrated by skinheads. Since then, Taylor has permanently resided in the infirmary. In addition to this neglect and abuse, a new guard took his blanket, a small “luxury” needed to get any sleep in a cold jail. Lastly, a nurse left Taylor in scalding hot water, which caused second-degree burns all over his body.

This is cruelty piled on cruelty. Taylor is already separated from his loved ones—whom he needs now more than ever. We demand justice, accountability, and restitution for Kevin Taylor and his family for this abuse. Please call and email the following authorities to ensure Taylor receives the treatment he needs and the justice we all deserve!

Hello [Name of person receiving the message],

My name is [your name] and I am calling concerning the well-being of Kevin Taylor #870721 who is not receiving the proper services while incarcerated at Miami Correctional Facility. He needs to receive the proper treatment for his disability. The guard who took Mr. Taylor’s  blanket needs to return it or provide a new one. Finally, the nurse who left Mr. Taylor in scalding hot water to which Mr. Taylor received second degree burns, needs to be terminated immediately. We know that you can and will carry out our message to tighten up your staff at Miami Correctional Facility by ensuring they live up to the mission of IDOC: “Indiana Correctional Industries is dedicated to providing incarcerated individuals real-world training programs that develop work ethics, skills and abilities to support successful re-entry.” I look forward to a positive outcome for Mr. Taylor and his family.

More on Kevin Taylor

Kevin Taylor is the brother of Kim Gray who lost her son, Eric Taylor, in September 2023 to IMPD violence inflicted overwhelmingly on the Black community. Gray is already grieving the loss of her son at the hands of the state.

A study by the National Institute of Justice confirms the multiplying effects of family separation via incarceration that affects the mental health of loved ones outside of the prison walls. This is not to mention compounding effects of psychological distress and oftentimes financial strain on one less income in the household. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, approximately 93% of the 185,000 federal inmates are men and 6.8% are women.  Women who on average make less income than men must then take on extra jobs to help make ends meet.
