July 27 is the 68th anniversary of the armistice signing that ended the U.S. war against Korea. In other words, it marks 68 years of the U.S.’s refusal to sign a peace treaty with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea) and 68 years of continued efforts to sabotage, strangle, and overthrow the indigenous and socialist people’s state. It marks 68 years of relentless propaganda against the state, its people, its leadership, and its government.

To commemorate the anniversary, we’re fighting back against one prominent wing of the propaganda machine–the defector industry–by screening Loyal Citizens of Pyongyang in Seoul, directed by PSL member David Yun. The film provides a glimpse into the world of defectors and South Korean Intelligence (formerly the KCIA). Through interviews with North Koreans living in Seoul and others, Yun compellingly demonstrates the consistent unreliability of defector testimony and provides a counternarrative to the uniform story we hear about the DPRK.

Before the movie, we’ll read solidarity statements written specially for the event from the People’s Democracy Party of South Corea and from Kim Il Sung University Prof. Chung Kiyul.
