How do we celebrate Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, when Black/New Afrikan people are not yet free? In this speech, prepared for a special event organized by the Shaka Shakur Freedom Campaign, Shaka A. Shakur notes this fundamental contradiction, drawing out the obstacles and, more importantly, opportunities it affords.
Shaka also speaks about the role of the Liberation Center and similar institutions are, can, and should play in the ongoing struggle for freedom, what we can do to help free him and all Political Prisoners, and more. For steps you can take to free Shaka right now, click here.

The event included remarks by representatives of the SSFC and a former inmate and Center volunteer who helped radicalize Shaka and participated in giving him his New Afrikan name in the ’80s. It opened with remarks by Dani Abdullah of PSL Indinapolis welcoming everyone to the Center and concluded with Hannah Harris of Circle City Sangha, who led everyone in a mindfulness session to help ground ourselves in our renewed commitment to the struggle.
