Liberated readers storytime: Our new path to lifelong learning

Saturday, August 10
11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Indianapolis Liberation Center

All parents, caretakers, and guardians are invited to bring their little ones for the Indiana Black Librarians Network’s (IBLN) new monthly liberated readers storytime program!

The IBLN’s new program will take place at our homebase, the Indianapolis Liberation Center, on the second Saturday of each month. While there are children’s reading groups throughout Indianapolis at libraries and elsewhere, they are typically held during weekdays and working hours. Our program provides all children, including the many families who can’t attend during those days and times–many of whom already suffer from systematic underfunding of our schools and other public educational programming–a chance to participate.

To promote literacy and the love of adventure, IBLN will choose exciting books with interactive stories of working together, caring for one another, and celebrating and honoring our diverse communities.

Liberated learners is open to young people up to around 10-years-old and, of course, those who care for them.

Reading is a fundamental practice that all humans can develop with proper support from the community. By promoting literacy in this way, we can develop an educated generation, strengthen their critical thinking skills, and engage their imagination into new worlds and possibilities. In doing so, we will learn the imagination and creativity inherent in our young people that is systematically repressed as we progress through the schooling system.

IBLN was established in 2001 to support Black library workers throughout the state of Indiana. We also support the community’s literacy and information resource needs through robust programming. We look forward to sharing some fun stories with you!
