While you can see local dis/abled and chronically ill artist Sarah Pfohl’s series of cyanotypes anytime before October 4, at the opening reception you’ll get a chance to hear from and speak with Pfohl about her latest exhibit, images she says are:
“Monuments to the days, but more likely weeks, of my life my health insurance company took from me as I attempted to advocate for access to medically-necessary care. My jewel boxes (my little things that help me feel better). My version of screaming. My attempt to remind myself I am human, something other than simply ‘denied’. A representation of disability and chronic illness rooted in lived experience that does not traffic in deficit-centric tropes too common in dominant culture. My response when someone asks, ‘What’s wrong with you?'”
Pfohl, who lives in Indianapolis, makes work about the value, power, and complexity of: a rural New York hill, the disabled body, and classroom teaching. She serves as Associate Professor of Photography and Art Education Coordinator in the Department of Art & Design at the University of Indianapolis. Her photographs have been included in group exhibitions at SF Camerawork (San Francisco), Filter Space (Chicago), The Reference (Seoul), Polygon Gallery (Vancouver), and theprintspace gallery (London). Sarah has participated in publications issued by Halfmoon Projects (Chicago), Oranbeg Press (Brooklyn), Soft Lightning (Brooklyn), Nightbird Zine (NY), Quiet Pages Press (PA), Goldenrod Editions (NY), Don’t Smile (FL), Funny Looking Dog Quarterly (Chicago), and Pine Island Press (Portland, OR). Her work was selected for participation in Broadside, a Covid-19 photo poster fundraiser coordinated by From Here On Out.
Pfohl’s recent writing has been published in HuffPost, Newsweek, and VISIBLE.
