This Friday, we’re hosting a community workshop on how we can organize our neighborhoods to resist ICE operations. Participants will be trained to take on the role of a “block captain”—a trusted community member who serves as a liaison between their neighborhood and local grassroots organizations. Workshop topics include legal observation tactics, connecting socially vulnerable neighborhoods to resources, and an analysis of the current political climate surrounding immigration.
Last month, calls to extend the general strikes in Minneapolis brought out Hoosiers across the state, demanding no business as usual until there’s justice for the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, as well as the abolition of ICE. These strikes were so overwhelmingly successful that the Trump administration was forced to retreat and scale back Operation Metro Surge. While the people of Minneapolis remain vigilant, we here in Indianapolis must not be lulled into a false sense of security. Congressional Democrats have declared victory on toothless “reforms,” but ICE has quietly announced the opening of a new office in Carmel. We cannot afford to wait for establishment politicians to represent our interests.
As predicted, ICE continues to quietly expand its personnel and operations in cities across the country. Our immigrant neighbors cannot wait until November’s midterm elections for the mere possibility that this campaign of terror might end. Hoosiers must remain vigilant against ICE’s shifting tactics and continue organizing to defend our communities.
The fight isn’t over. Join us at the Indy Liberation Center this Friday and become a block captain!
