Come out to ANSWER Indiana’s monthly meeting to discuss the lasting impact and lessons learned from the Stonewall Rebellion. Together, we will read an article detailing the history behind the Stonewall uprisings and then engage in small group discussion.
The Stonewall uprising that began on June 27, 1969, in New York City marked the arrival of the modern mass movement for equality for the LGBTQ community. The rebellion erupted after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar. The occupants were forced out on the street when they decided to take a stand and fight back. They hurled bricks and other objects at police, and even used a parking meter as a battering ram. Drag queens and other trans folk with experience in self-defense—due to the violence they face because of their identity—were the leading force of the crowd.
Through militancy and determination, the queer community came to understand the power that lies in fighting back. While the struggle for true liberation of LGBTQ people is still ongoing, we must draw inspiration from the queer revolutionaries who reminded us that our true power lies in our ability to protect each other and fight back against state repression and violence.
The state’s use of militant police to suppress struggles within marginalized and oppressed groups is nothing new, then or now. Today, we are witnessing an intensification of militant force against our immigrant neighbors and the community who is bravely fighting to protect them against ICE raids. Similar to Stonewall, it is the people—who are being targeted by police violence and terror— that are fighting back. We keep us safe, not killer cops!
We will continue to dive into this historical moment of LGBTQ history and discuss how we can continue to fight back against police violence this Tuesday. Pull up and reconnect with queer history!
