On Saturday, ANSWER Indiana will host a collective study of the final chapter of Ghassan Kanafani’s book The Revolution of 1936-39 in Palestine, in which the author breaks down the events of the Palestinian resistance to Zionist occupation and its consequences for the following period in the Palestinian national liberation struggle.
The Revolution of 1936-39 in Palestine was written shortly after the 1967 Naksa, or “setback,” which marked the beginning of Israel’s decades-long occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. Its purpose was to understand another moment of defeats in the history of the Palestinian struggle, which set the stage for the Nakba and the creation of a Zionist state. For this reason, this text is particularly relevant now in 2024, at a moment of both extreme acts of terror by the Zionist entity and immense opportunity for the forces of Palestinian liberation.
Theory and history are a weapon in the hands of the oppressed, as this book clearly demonstrates. Its author, Palestinian revolutionary Ghassan Kanafani, was known as “the commando who never fired a gun.” His keen writings were so dangerous to Israel that he became a top target of the Mossad and was ultimately martyred by Israeli agents via a car bomb on July 8, 1972, along with his 17-year-old niece.
In our final meeting on this vital text, we will study and discuss the events of the revolution, alongside other activists and organizers, to take its lessons forward and apply them to our own organizing for the liberation of Palestine and the world!
