Come out to ANSWER Indiana’s monthly meeting to engage in dialogue surrounding the need for housing for all. The discussion will be led by a panel of community members who have experienced homelessness before as well as organizations that currently serve our unhoused neighbors. Because together, we are unstoppable!
Indianapolis, like most other American cities, presents two conflicting themes: Thousands of homes sit empty—many owned by rich landlords and investors who live on the other side of the country—while thousands of human beings sleep on the streets. Tent cities grow up in the shadows of “luxury” apartments that will never reach capacity.
Meanwhile, the state tries to criminalize homelessness and pours hundreds of millions of our tax dollars into building an enormous new jail on the east side—the euphemistically (and incorrectly) named “Community Justice Campus.”
Hoosiers are forced into homelessness for multitudes of reasons: medical debt, loss of employment, and more. Not only that, but wages have been stagnant for decades while rent prices exponentially increase. Home ownership is at an all time low as investment groups have been given free range to swallow up the majority of real estate, buying homes they will never once step foot inside.
And the government’s response? Send in IMPD to raid the camps of struggling Hoosiers and destroy their belongings. From Gaza to Indianapolis, the capitalist system creates poverty and destruction. It is a system that has proven time and time again that it will always prioritize using our money for death and destruction, not to meet the needs of the people.
