Friday, May 1
1:00 – 4:00 pm
Indiana Statehouse (200 W Washington St)
While the origins of May Day are traced back to the late 19th century in the Midwest, it wasn’t until 20 years ago that it re-entered the consciousness of the broader movement. PSL Indianapolis is mobilizing and calling on all of our supporters to show up and demonstrate the power of the international working class! The following text is taken from the original event posting by Indiana Resistance Indivisible:
Abolish ICE, protect all people, and demand dignity.
This peaceful May Day action brings together organizations and community members from across Indiana.
May 1, known as International Workers’ Day, originated from the 1886 campaign for an eight-hour workday and the subsequent Haymarket Affair in Chicago. While it symbolizes global labor solidarity, its roots lie in Chicago, where a general strike saw 300,000 workers demand better working conditions. 💪
On May 1, 2006, there was a historic one-day boycott of schools and businesses by immigrants in the United States, known as “A Day Without Immigrants.”
