This Black August, Reading with Comrades is engaging Eugene Puryear’s Shackled and Chained: Mass Incarceration in America, a critical examination and analysis of the evolution of mass incarceration. Puryear details why mass incarceration is a continuation of and a distinct form of the national oppression of Black people in the U.S., distinguishing it from “the New Jim Crow” and “slavery in another form.” Only by clarifying the root causes of mass incarceration can we effectively dismantle it.
This read is especially important at the recent escalation of ICE raids, heightened surveillance against working and oppressed peoples, and the construction of a new $1.2 billion jail in our state. This book study is great for anyone who is interested in the “how” and “why” of mass incarceration as well as those seeking the truth of what it is like on the “inside.”
