Letter writing to detainees: Punjabi and Haitian Creole

Tuesday, September 2
5:00 pm
Guru Nanak Sikh Society
1911 Hobart Rd.

Connect with each other and our people in detention at this letter-writing event organized by Umeed-Hope and the Indiapaolis Liberation Center, and graciously hosted by the Guru Nanak Sikh Society.

Letters can be written in either languages or English, and our volunteers will translate them before delivery. For many, these letters will be the first time in a long while they are able to read something in their native language—a small gesture of peace, a prayer, or perhaps a spark of hope from a caring stranger.

We’re grateful to gather at the Guru Nanak Sikh Society, a space that has been serving the community since the 1990s and served as Umeed-Hope’s hub this summer. Learn about the Sikh community, share a meal prepared in our community kitchen, and help us send messages of comfort and solidarity to those enduring detention in harsh conditions.

Light food and snacks will be available courtesy of the Gurdwara’s free kitchen. Please note that, as this event is held at a Gurdwara, before entering, we will keep the tops of our heads covered and take our shoes off. This important event is held in a sober space (including nicotine).

About Umeed-Hope

Umeed-Hope is a Sikh-led coalition working in solidarity with other marginalized communities to dismantle systems of oppression and build a world rooted in justice, collective care, and liberation.

Founded in 2022, we initially operated as a nonprofit organization, in 2024 we transformed into a mutual aid group to more effectively address the interconnected issues affecting our communities.

Through mutual aid and community-driven initiatives, we address interconnected issues such as gender-based violence, abolition, mental health, anti-war efforts, and other forms of systemic injustice. Grounded in the Sikh values of service and equity, we believe in the power of collective action, fostering inclusive spaces where everyone has access to the resources they need and the opportunity to lead.
