Saturday, February 15
3:00 – 5:00 pm
Indianapolis Liberation Center
Despite the public eruption against policing and prisons in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, the growth of these institutions has shown no signs of slowing down. In 2022, Indianapolis completed a new, $600 million jail. For the city’s most recently adopted budget, a record amount of money has been allocated to policing. Expansion has not been limited to Indianapolis. Right now, plans for new jails are moving forward in Fort Wayne, Monroe County, and nearby Letcher County in Kentucky. The largest of these projects is the currently-under-construction, $1.2 billion prison in LaPorte County.
At any site of repression like jails and prisons, there is bound to be resistance. During this event, learn how organizers in Indiana and Kentucky are waging campaigns against prison and jail expansion in our communities! Speakers include members of Help Not Handcuffs in Fort Wayne, Care Not Cages in Bloomington, Critical Resistance in Kentucky, and IDOC Watch in Indianapolis. We will discuss the details of the current plans to build new jails and prisons in our homes and communities and how we are struggling to stop them. Come to learn about these various campaigns and to get involved!
