Thursday: Don’t let Braun circumvent democracy! ICE is not welcome in our city or our state!
We made that clear on the morning of Jan. 28 when we successfully prevented House Bill 1158, which would require Sheriffs to cooperate with ICE under penalty, from advancing in the Statehouse.
Later that day Gov. Mike Braun issued a racist and undemocratic executive order requiring state law enforcement to collaborate with ICE through 287g.
The 287g program authorizes state and local police forces to enforce immigration law in their jurisdiction. While those in favor claim it removes “dangerous criminals” from the community, in practice 287g agreements are the real danger. They make our communities unsafe by increasing police and state repression, racist policing and profiling, and burning through local budgets.
The people of Indiana do not want this legislation. In the nearly 30 years the 287g program has been law, not a single county in Indiana has voluntarily participated. Only a united public, in defense of our neighbors, can stop this assault by our elected officials. Braun may have his agenda, but we have the people!
Show up Thursday to make your voice heard as the movement against mass deportations continues to grow here in Indiana and across the country!
