It’s a testament to the power of the people that, in a matter of decades, mass consciousness of the need for LGBTQ liberation has progressed by leaps and bounds. It is not surprising that, when social issues become widely popular, the ruling class and its institutions follow suit and try to co-opt and tame the movement that produced the real change in the first place. That doesn’t negate the fact that, even in the middle of Indiana, tens of thousands of people spend their weekend celebrating the LGBTQ freedom struggle.

Only a year after the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion that birthed the contemporary LGBTQ struggle, many mainstream activists were hesitant to call the event a march for power; they preferred “pride” instead. Wherever one stands on the issue, it’s clear today that power is the real matter at hand.

At the Liberation Center, we’re celebrating pride by building political power. Let’s build together!
