Disability empowerment unconference

A Civil Rights protest for access for people with disabilities. At the front of a large march are three people using wheelchairs and a person walking with a service dog. The man person in a wheelchair on the right side of the image holds a sign that says “Overcome”, the woman in a wheelchair next to him, at the center of the picture, has a sign that says “Access is a Civil Right” covering her legs. A man with a service dog walks next to her and a young girl using a wheelchair is to the dog’s left. All four are wearing shirts with the “ADAPT” logo on the front. Several other people using wheelchairs, including Justin Dart, are in the crowd marching behind them. On the top right it reads "Nothing About Us Without Us" just below "August 27-31, JW Marriott"

In Indiana, small groups of people have been actively making decisions that impact 20% of Indiana’s population—without that population’s input. People with disabilities (PWD) in Indiana have been ignored for far too long. Indiana lacks a powerful disability community, and we want to change that.

Are you tired of PWD being blamed for recent national disasters? Are you aware of the lawsuit against Section 504 of the Rehab Act and Indiana’s role in it? Do you know how important Section 504 is for PWD? Are you tired of trying to navigate a system that was never designed for you? Are you frustrated that your voice is never heard?

Do you want to see real change?

Some people say that real change will only come to Indiana “when pigs fly.” Well, get ready to make some pigs fly!

Who?

Everybody Counts, Inc. and Walking Spirit are looking for 50 people in the disability community who want to become more informed and empowered advocates and leaders. Applicants must be adults (18+) who live or work in Indiana and self-identify as a person with a disability. Parents of PWD and people who work for disability related organizations will be considered, but priority will be given to people with no formal affiliation. Scroll down for application.
