Close the loophole! Urge the Senate to pass the Adoptee Citizenship Act now!

By Asian Adoptees of Indiana

On February 4th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the America COMPETES Act. This bill included a number of amendments, including the Adoptee Citizenship Act.

This is an historic moment for the adoptee community, because the ACA has never before made it this far into the legislative process. But there is still work to be done.

Because the Senate already passed their version of the COMPETES Act back in June, the two chambers will now come together to work out the differences in the bill before sending it to the President. However, this does not mean that this is a done deal, as the ACA could be stripped from the final bill or the bill never gets finalized and dies at the end of this Congressional session.

We must continue connecting with our respective senators and urging them not only to reach a final version of the bill, but to ensure that the Adoptee Citizenship Act is included in that final version.

Our impacted community members have waited over 20 years for citizenship; the time to act is now.
