Join us for a critical discussion on revolutionary pedagogy and anti-imperialist education with the editors and contributors of Socialist Education in Korea: Selected Writings of Kim Il Sung.
On January 30, the Indy Liberation Store will host a panel featuring Riley Seungyoon Park and Derek Ford (editors and contributors to this groundbreaking volume), along with other movement organizers. This event continues the vital conversation started at the book’s 2022 launch, exploring how Korea’s revolutionary educational practices offer essential lessons for today’s struggles.
In a world where the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is relentlessly demonized and misrepresented, this book cuts through the propaganda to examine the role of education in building a socialist society under siege. Through selected writings by Kim Il Sung, the volume reveals how education in Korea has been used not for indoctrination, but to empower people to understand their history, resist imperialism, and shape their own political future.
Our panelists will discuss:
- How socialist pedagogy in Korea fosters national consciousness, collective agency, and anti-imperialist resolve
- The stark contrasts between education under socialism and under capitalism, where schooling often alienates rather than emancipates
- Lessons for organizers and educators in the U.S. working to build political consciousness and revolutionary practice
- The ongoing struggle for Korean reunification and the role of diaspora solidarity
- Practical applications of Juche in education and community organizing
This event is free and open to all. The Indy Liberation Store and Center rely entirely on community support to keep our lights on and our doors open. If you’d like to help sustain this hub for radical learning and organizing, we welcome donations of any size. Purchasing the book, or any title from our carefully curated selection, directly supports our all-volunteer space and fuels the local movement.

No prior reading is required! Come as you are, ready to learn and discuss. Socialist Education in Korea is available in paperback at the Indy Liberation Store and as a free PDF from Iskra Books.
Let’s learn from one of the world’s most resilient socialist experiments and explore what it means to educate for revolution.
