Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s commitment to social justice, we invite you to a community conversation on fair pay for local artists. Join us for a vibrant discussion on supporting artists in Indianapolis and advocating for equitable funding.
We’re honoring Kahlo’s legacy of uniting art and activism—just as she championed workers’ rights in Mexico, we’re fighting for artists’ livelihoods here. After the talk, we’ll analyze the mayor’s proposed 2026 budget, which allocates a mere $2 million for the arts out of a historic $1.7 billion budget. Meanwhile, policing receives the largest share—an imbalance Kahlo would have fiercely opposed.
Local artists’ funding shouldn’t depend on nonprofits backed by corporate donors who stifle creative freedom. Our artists deserve year-round support, not just when major events come to town. They should have the resources to create freely, reflect the spirit of Indianapolis’ working class, and envision a more just world through their work.
Let’s demand better. Together.
