Discover the powerful artistic works of Sammy Penaloza. His unique expression takes viewers on a visceral journey into the depths of humanity and the mind. Fearlessly exploring his own psyche, Sammy often paints figures that appear nightmarish. On the other end of the spectrum, his work delves into the profound depths of love and light. It is through this raw self-exploration and vulnerability that his art finds multiple ways to connect with the audience.
What Sammy’s work challenges us to do is to feel—to confront the things that are hard to put into words and experience them intensely. His artistic expression is defined by bold risks, showcasing the extremes of the mind. He taps into the emotional and imaginative depth that exists within all of us, his work a quiet affirmation: I see you, and I, too, feel deeply.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Sammy has called Indianapolis home since 2006. His desire to be a painter has been with him since childhood. Since then, his work has been featured at the Harrison Center, and he has painted public murals throughout the city in partnership with Citizens Energy and the Big Car Collaborative. His art explores identity and the full spectrum of human emotion. Ultimately, Sammy’s paintings teach us how to be vulnerable with one another and honest about what occupies our minds and what is tucked away in our hearts. He shatters the illusion of hiding his innermost thoughts, even when they are troubling to confront.
Sammy Penaloza’s art invites us on a path of exploration and self-discovery. When an artist is in tune with their innermost depths, their work can take them—and us—to unimaginable heights. Join us for Sammy’s opening and discover the extremes that exist within you.
