There’s no socialism without disability liberation, and there’s no capitalism without the oppression of disabled people. In fact, capitalism, especially in its imperialist form, is one of the main forces producing disability. In this class, we’ll survey the history of the disability rights movement in the U.S., how they forged ties with liberation struggles during the mid-20th Century, and the wave of victories and defeats that followed. We’ll explore these themes and more by reading Disability and empire: Class, U.S. imperialism, and the struggle for disability justice by Joyche Chediac, Jane Cutter, John Peter Daly (RIP), and Sunil Freeman.
