The Fonseca-Du Bois Gallery is proud to present Naturalistic Forms, featuring the work of Indianapolis artist India Hines as our September Featured Artist. Hines’ work moves between figurative faces and organic forms, using intuitive lines, shapes, and fluid compositions to create pieces that feel simultaneously dreamlike, natural, and deeply human.
A self-taught artist born in Denver and raised in Indianapolis, Hines’ practice is rooted in intuition, spirituality, and the subconscious. Their deeply meditative process allows emotion, memory, ancestry, and spiritual guidance to shape each work, exploring themes of identity, lineage, resilience, intimacy, and transformation. Drawing from their African American and Melanesian heritage, Hines honors ancestry, myth, and the human spirit while creating work that invites viewers to slow down, reflect, and reconnect. As Hines describes their practice, “I see my practice as a space for both self-discovery and connection.” They believe that “art is never created in isolation,” but is shaped by the people, places, and experiences that surround us. Hines is a Long-Term Artist in Residence with the Contemporary Art Museum of Indianapolis (CAMi), and their work has been exhibited at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields and the Indiana State Museum.
