Substance-abuse and addiction affect the families of working class Hoosiers everyday. If you have a loved one who is struggling, please join Kat Lawson for a class to learn the tools to engage with those in active addiction. Lawson, who teaches practical strategies to motivate change, holds a certificate of training on the brain and disease of addiction as well as a Naloxone Administration Trainer.
She will share her research on substance use and address the various external factors that shape one’s relationship to illegal substances. The workshop will help attendees create an environment where our loved ones are motivated to reduce or discontinue use to reduce the heat, friction, frustration, and feelings of helplessness.
Lawson will provide a demonstration on administering Naloxone and instruct attendees how to spot the warning signs of an overdose.
Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is a skills-based program for families of people who struggle with addiction. It is designed to support family members across multiple areas, including self-care, pleasurable activities, problem-solving, and goal-setting, while at the same time teaching behavioral and motivational strategies for interacting with their loved one and addressing resistance to change. Participants learn, for example, the power of positive reinforcement for healthy behavior (and of withdrawing it for unwanted behavior), and how to use communication skills to improve interactions and maximize their influence.
