The oppression of disabled people is not part of any “survival of the fittest” theory of human nature. Not only does archeological evidence suggest humans have long cared for people we would now label “disabled, but the very definition of disability varies according to society, space, and time. Just think about how the each edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders gets longer and longer.
What is the relationship between capitalism, imperialism, and disability? How might we, as a collective, approach and reconfigure our world not to eliminate how certain people are and think and act in the world but to encourage each person’s uniqueness? Might there be ways that people become disabled we would want to eliminate?
