“Collective struggle:” Media amplifies Liberation Center’s work

As an entity operating without a public relations team or any paid staff at all, it’s affirming to see our work—which is your work, too—amplified in the local media. On May 18, journalist Johnette Cruz wrote an article on the Center‘s origins, mission, and work for WIBC 93.1 FM.

Noting our new location on 1619 Prospect St. “has become a central point for marginalized residents seeking everything from artistic expression to high-level advocacy,” Cruz emphasizes that its more than a place to meet: “its volunteers say the center’s true purpose is to serve as an ‘incubator’ for social change.”

We are proud of the many struggles and even organizations the Center and our volunteers helped birth by dedicating our time, energy, and limited financial resources.

Cruz highlights one of our member-organizations most recently-unveiled projects, MaskOff12.com. PSL Indianapolis, which is the group behind the effort, notes that:

“Killer cops are rarely held accountable for their crimes against our communities because other state agents do everything they can to protect them. One of the most powerful weapons is their anonymity.

Mask Off 12, a project of the Indianapolis branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, removes the anonymity these racist killer cops hide behind, and promotes the people’s right to know the identities of the real criminals terrorizing our neighborhoods.

We work with families and survivors of police terror to correct cops’ lies in the media about their loved ones. We fight for indictments and convictions of brutal and killer cops. We stand with victims and families in the courtroom and on the streets.”

Finally, in addition to highlighting our insistence on maintaining complete financial independence to guarantee our complete political independence, Cruz notes what makes the Center unique is our approach to people of all ages: “Unlike many political spaces,” she writes, “children are not just tolerated but encouraged to participate in events alongside their caretakers.”

We want to thank Cruz for highlighting the work of our volunteer organizers and our many projects, including her coverage of the struggle to free Lamonte Thomas. Sign the petition here!
