Beyond demonstrating solidarity and care for our communities and each other, what are the real politics behind distributing essential goods to our homeless and unhoused neighbors? The best way to answer this question is to join our Black August assembly, where we will experience the direct connection between preparing our Hope Packages and the centuries-long revolutionary struggle for Black/New Afrikan Liberation!
We are truly honored that Revolutionary New Afrikan Political Prisoner Shaka A. Shakur will join in our assembly and discussion this month, and just as excited to celebrate his birthday with him! The Black/New Afrikan struggle has always been a struggle for nationhood—sovereignty, self-determination, and autonomy. As Shaka will discuss, Hope Packages is a manifestation of one route to nationhood: dual power. There are a variety of concepts and practices of dual power. According to Shaka:
“Dual Power helps us to build and put in place the basic infrastructure and pillars of the society we say we want to create. It also helps some of us to heal and recover from the damage caused by living under such a system, while we simultaneously work to change and or destroy some of the sick social relations and social intercourse with one another that we have been taught is natural, like racism for example.”
In other words, as we gather and distribute essential supplies, including harm-reduction materials, for our neighbors, we’re building counter-institutions to realize our 10-Point Program, and particularly Point 10:
“More jails, police, and surveillance cameras don’t keep us safe. By divesting from the police state and funding community-centered public safety measures like those outlined above, our vision can be achieved easily and quickly.”
Everyone is invited to our package assembly on the third Saturday of August! Get to know your neighbors, participate in community education, and work toward a future of collective liberation. To build power, we have to rely on ourselves and each other. This month, donating to or, even better, sustaining Hope Packages a birthday gift to our revolutionary leader currently locked behind enemy lines. The more Sustainers we have, the more reliably we can organize and distribute our packages!
Another option is to purchase items directly from our Amazon wishlist for deliberty to the Indianapolis Liberation Center. This month we are in need of:
