“If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”
Over 50 years later, Malcolm X’s warning remains important for progressives and radicals. His words were not about one issue but the press and the racist, U.S. state in general. Why is it that, every July, the U.S. celebrates a Revolution of slave-owning generals and politicians who publicly executed their enemies, hung their corpses from street posts, and more, while condemning Palestinians and other oppressed groups for using “violence” or “terror” to win their freedom?
Media and politicians on “both sides” of the aisle want us to think that “our” enemies are in Russia, China, Venezuela, Cuba, Korea, and Iran. They want us to hate the people who are being oppressed and love those who are doing the oppressing. Despite their immense differences, the so-called enemies just listed have one thing in common: standing up against the tyranny of U.S. imperialism.
In addition to updates on local struggles, this month’s Liberation Forum features presentations by PSL Indianapolis activists and organizers revealing how Malcolm’s words apply to figures revolutionary groups and figures worldwide look up to, from Assata Shakur and the Black Panther Party to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Be part of this important and timely dialogue where we will develop a shared ability to identify our real enemies. Working together, we’ll learn what we can accomplish when we arm ourselves and others with that ability and collectively fight back against the tiny minority of the globe who keep the masses in misery.
