On April 25, 2022, Herman Whitfield III’s mother called 911 to request an ambulance to assist him during a mental health crisis.  Instead, six IMPD police officers showed up and killed him in front of his parents.  Without any threat or provocation from Herman, IMPD police officers plotted and proceeded to electrocute Herman the taser – twice.

Then, they tackled him, ignored his cries that he could not breathe, and suffocated him.  And, the officers held Herman face down and double handcuffed in the prone position for more than 5 minutes before anyone ever attempted CPR. The coroner determined the manner of death was homicide.  The City and IMPD attempted to hide these facts from the public, so the family’s attorneys went to federal court to force the City to release the full and unedited body cam footage.  The family released both an expanded compilation of the body cam footage and the complete video to the public on January 14, 2023.

All six officers are still employed and on administrative leave.  IMPD released a statement saying that it will not make decisions on the employment of the officers until after criminal proceedings conclude.
