Last summer, Indianapolis saw a number of record breaking, extreme heat, leaving a number of our unhoused neighbors at risk for heat stroke and death. While shelters and cooling centers are resources, oftentimes, shelters have certain operating hours and capacity standards, leaving a lot of homeless people to fend for themselves within the heat. In addition to this, Indianapolis will begin enforcing their homelessness encampment ban July 1, 2026 putting unhoused people at risk for citations and misdemeanor charges for using public spaces to rest.
Hope Packages and The Whispering Shelf hope to provide some relief and critical aid to our unhoused neighbors this spring and summer. We know that it truly takes the community to care for one another and we can not rely on a government that puts profits over the people’s needs. Our aid packages are just a small step towards a larger struggle towards housing everyone in our community! We want you to be a part of this initiative and we are asking for the community to donate the items listed and/or be a part of our assembly and distribution taking place April 26th at 1pm at the Indy Liberation Center.
For every donation, you win one entry into a raffle. If you make a purchase in store in addition to the donation, you win an extra entry. Raffle prizes are a tote bag, books, merch item and other goodies! There are a total of three prizes to win!
You can donate at The Whispering Shelf or the Center during open hours listed above!
