Indianapolis’ longest-running grassroots project of solidarity (sometimes called mutual aid) is launching a new Sustainers program! Sustainers provide a reliable source of funding that allow us to organize more effectively and ensure that our essential work can continue and now you can directly donate to and sustain Hope Packages, which has, for three and a half years, assembled and distributed essential goods to our homeless and vulnerable neighbors. Hope Packages is more than a mutual aid program, and every package they assemble and distribute is part of achieving their 10-Point Program, which it calls “a politically clear, accessible, and achievable vision.”
“We’re excited about the new Sustainers Program because it ensures more consistent financial support, which will enable us to have flexibility and expand our projects,” said Brooks Behr, Hope Packages Co-Coordinator. “Others share this enthusiasm as they see the positive impact their contributions are making on transforming our city.”
During the course of the struggle against Prop. 291–an anti-homeless ordinance that would have significantly impacted the ability of our community to support each other and further criminalized homelessness–the idea for a new grassroots, politically-oriented homeless outreach program emerged. By January 2021, less than two months after the people defeated Prop. 291, that idea materialized in the form of Hope Packages.
With generous community support, this political direct-aid project has thrived through actions grown from our shared commitment to dignity, care, and justice—not grants or sponsorships. With every donation, you strengthen Hope Packages’ capacity to build and your own role as an active member of our community.
“The new Sustainers program will allow us to provide a greater variety of nutritious foods and vital toiletries in our package!” said Elliot Froese, HP volunteer. “This will be an exciting way for community members to provide additional support, especially for those who want to become involved but might not have time to attend our meetings.”

Hope Packages meets the immediate needs of our neighbors who are homelessness or otherwise forced into precarious situations. Your donation will sustain the ongoing work of Hope Packages by guaranteeing a ready supply of food, water, menstrual items, medical items, clothing, and more. With one Sustainer’s monthly donation of $20, Hope Packages can reliably supply the community with 36 packages every year.
