Indianapolis Liberation Center
The weekend before the elections, the Indianapolis Liberation Center is hosting the Radical Educators of Indy’s weekend-long workshop for community leaders and engaged scholars.
The Radical Educators of Indy, a loose collective of teachers, pedagogues, activists, and other educators who meet regularly to engage in and highlight public scholarship.
About the workshop
The purpose of the workshop is to provide a local forum for a variety of radical activists and organizers from all segments of our class to practice what we preach: the difficult work of building unity across differences. In particular, we seek to develop counterhegemonic theoretical practices to combat the contemporary hegemonic “radical” theories that are produced in but emanate from the isolated university.
We have selected a cohort of 10 young organizers, some of whom work low-wage jobs and some of whom are in their junior-senior year of high school or their first two years of local public universities.
We are calling for workshop submissions on the theme of popular education and multi-national unity from tenured, tenure-track, adjunct, and other university faculty or recognized educators.
For admission to this workshop, which is limited by spatial and organizational capacity, applicants must, as individuals or as a group, have some body of work (in whatever form) they want to develop in community with our cohort.
Accepted applicants must evidence a desire to work with those outside of their discipline, areas of interest, identities and backgrounds, and even professions, to transform their base-line proposal into a collective product or ongoing process.
After accepted submissions are collated, we will distribute them amongst all participants, including our youth cohort and conference organizers. Before the workshop begins, we will distribute a form indicating your preference for working with other applicants and/or particular topics of interest to the cohort. All participants will be notified of, and introduced to, their partner(s) at least one week before the workshop begins, although there is no expectation of engagement during this time.
We will collectively determine the organization of the two strands of participants (teachers and youth/students) together based on not only the pre-workshop materials but also on our initial interactions on the first morning.
It might turn out that the 10 accepted educators want to work as an entire collective, or that five pairs of educators work with any number of students from the cohort.
Submissions
Accepted applicants will demonstrate their desire and ability to work, on equal footing, with high-school or undergraduate students, or youth between the ages of 16-24, through their submission materials, which will include:
- an updated cv or artist resume
- a 250 word abstract of the proposed project
- a 1000-2000 word draft or elaborated proposal for the project in mind
Please email the above materials as PDF attachment to leads@indyliberationcenter.org by October 05 for consideration, ensuring to include “Radical Educators of Indy Workshop” in the subject line. All applicants will be notified of their status within 10 days.
Product and process
Over two days, we will spend intensive time together sharing knowledge within our groupings and/or as an entire collective. Finished or polished products are not expected after the workshop. However, we hope that all groupings can, during the last half of the day on Sunday, relay a:
- 10-20 minute group presentation;
- 10 page paper;
- 10-30 minute activity for the group; or a
- 10 page proposal for continued activity
Workshop participant costs and payment
To reserve spaces for the workshop, provide drinks, snacks, and meals, and subsidize transportation for the youth cohort, as well as to cover all production materials and access to art and builder spaces, the following fees apply based on professional status:
Tenured Faulty: $2,000
Tenure-Track Faculty: $1,000
Adjunct Faculty: $500
We look forward to your submissions! If you have any questions, please email leads@indyliberationcenter.org and include “Radical Educators of Indy – Question” in your subject line.
If accepted, you can pay by cash, check, credit card, PayPal, Venmo, or Cashapp anytime before the workshop begins. The Indianapolis Liberation Center is handling all financial aspects of the conference, so please make payments out to them or the “Indy Liberation Center.”
