Dozens of anti-war activists demand “Hands Off Venezuela” on Monument Circle

Two weeks after major anti-war marches in Washington, DC, and Los Angeles and one week after a successful teach-in about Venezuela at Butler University, the Peace In Venezuela Coalition, which ANSWER Indiana is a participant in, called a rally on Monument Circle to demand an end to the ongoing US-backed coup attempt, sanctions, and threats of war against Venezuela.

Over 30 anti-war activists braved a late March cold snap that brought snow to central Indiana to make their voices heard on the steps of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, chanting “No sanctions, no coup! Venezuela, we stand with you!” and “Chávez, ¡presente! Maduro, ¡presidente!”

The following solidarity statement was read at the rally:

To the people of Venezuela:

We are the workers of Indiana, which is sadly the home state of Vice President Mike Pence. We are here in the state capital, Indianapolis, on Monument Circle, in a rally called by the Peace In Venezuela Coalition to say: “Yankee Hands Off Venezuela!”

Last week, the Peace In Venezuela Coalition held a teach-in about the situation in Venezuela and the truth that has not been covered in the imperialist press, and forty people attended. The next day, a Venezuelan expat in Indianapolis called a rally to ask the United States to invade Venezuela. It rained, and not a single person showed up!

Today, it’s cold—it’s only one degree Celsius! But we have twenty-five people on the streets of Indianapolis. The antiwar movement in the United States is awakening in every state, from the coasts to the heartland. We stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and the Bolivarian Revolution! We say: “No to the coup! No to the sanctions! No to the war against Venezuela!”

Chavez lives! The struggle continues!
